History

History at Barnes…

Our history curriculum helps children understand themselves, their families and the wider world through learning about the past. Our curriculum is designed specifically for Barnes, taking account of our local context in Sunderland so that pupils make meaningful connections between their own lives, their community and historical events.

Learning builds on the strong foundations established in the Early Years, where children begin to talk about past and present experiences. In Key Stage One, historical knowledge is carefully sequenced so that pupils develop understanding of chronology, significant people, events and changes within living memory and beyond.

Vocabulary and discussion are prioritised so that children can talk confidently about the past, describe how life has changed over time and use historical language accurately.

Our history curriculum is designed to be inclusive so that all pupils can succeed, using clear modelling, images, artefacts and structured talk to support understanding.

Through history at Barnes, children develop secure knowledge of the past, curiosity about different times and places, and strong foundations for continued historical learning in Key Stage 2.
