Water Safety

Swimming and water safety is included within the National Curriculum PE programme of study in England. As such, all children should leave primary school able to swim and with knowledge of how to stay safe in and around water.
Barnes Infant Academy provides swimming lessons for KS1 pupils where the children are taught to:
  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively e.g. front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Barnes Infant Academy has signed up to the School Swimming and Water Safety Charter
We teach children to follow the water safety code as defined by RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents)
The dangers of water include:
  • it is very cold
  • there may be hidden currents
  • it can be difficult to get out (steep slimy banks)
  • it can be deep
  • there may be hidden rubbish, e.g. shopping trolleys, broken glass
  • there are no lifeguards
  • it is difficult to estimate depth
  • it may be polluted and may make you ill
