PSHE
PSHE at Barnes…
Our PSHE curriculum is designed to develop the whole child so that every pupil feels safe, valued and ready to learn.
We deliver PSHE through the Jigsaw programme, which provides a carefully sequenced curriculum from Nursery to Year 2. Through its themes including Being in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me, children develop a strong understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.
This learning is rooted in our Barnes values. We set high expectations for behaviour and teach children what it means to be safe, kind and ready to learn. We promote a positive attitude so that children engage fully and take pride in their learning. Through our focus on respect, children learn to value difference, build relationships and understand their role within a community.
A Regulate to Educate Approach
Our approach is informed by research and aligns with the principles of The Good Morning Club. We recognise that children must feel calm, safe and connected before they are ready to learn.
This is closely linked to our value of staying safe, both physically and emotionally. Through calm routines, consistent adult responses and strong relationships, children learn how to regulate their emotions and make positive choices.
We also promote never giving up. Children are taught that challenge is part of learning and that effort leads to success. Through the PSHE curriculum and daily practice, they develop resilience, perseverance and confidence. We foster enthusiasm for learning so that children are motivated, curious and ready to take part.
Belonging at the Heart
Our PSHE curriculum is closely aligned with our whole school approach to behaviour. Our shared expectations are clear and consistent across the school. Children are taught and supported to be safe, kind and ready to learn in all areas of school life.
We understand that behaviour is part of learning. Children are taught what is expected through modelling, practice and consistent routines. Adults respond calmly and consistently so that children feel secure and are able to learn from their experiences. This creates a strong sense of belonging where every child feels valued and included. Please see our Belonging At Barnes Policy.
What This Means for Our Children
At Barnes Infant Academy, PSHE is woven through every part of school life. Children learn how to understand themselves, manage their emotions and build positive relationships.
They develop enthusiasm for learning, show respect for others and approach challenges with confidence. They understand how to keep themselves safe and take pride in making positive choices.
This means our children are safe, kind and ready to learn, equipped for the next stage of their education and prepared for life beyond Barnes.
