Geography

Geography at Barnes…

Our geography curriculum helps children make sense of the world around them and understand their place within it. Our curriculum is designed specifically for Barnes, taking account of our local context in Sunderland so that pupils begin learning about familiar places before extending their understanding to the wider world.

Learning builds on the strong foundations established in the Early Years, where children explore their environment and talk about the places they know. In Key Stage One, geographical knowledge is carefully sequenced so that pupils develop understanding of place, location, mapping, human and physical features, and weather and climate.

Vocabulary and discussion are prioritised so that children can describe places, explain geographical features and use subject-specific language accurately.

Our geography curriculum is designed to be inclusive so that all pupils can succeed, using maps, photographs, fieldwork and practical exploration to support understanding.

Through geography at Barnes, children develop secure knowledge of places and environments, curiosity about the wider world and strong foundations for continued geographical learning in Key Stage 2.
