Design & Technology
Design & Technology at Barnes…
Our Design and Technology curriculum enables children to become imaginative, practical and purposeful designers who can solve real problems. Our curriculum is designed specifically for Barnes, taking account of our local context in Sunderland so that children design and create products that feel meaningful and relevant to their experiences.
Learning builds on the strong foundations established in the Early Years, where children explore materials, tools and construction through practical play. In Key Stage One, knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced so that pupils develop understanding of structures, mechanisms, cooking and nutrition, and the relationship between products, their function and their user.
Vocabulary and discussion are prioritised so that children can explain their ideas, describe materials and tools, and reflect on how their designs can be improved.
Our DT curriculum is designed to be inclusive so that all pupils can succeed, using clear modelling, practical experiences and structured support to help children develop confidence when designing and making.
Through Design and Technology at Barnes, children develop creativity, practical skills and problem-solving abilities, providing strong foundations for continued learning in Key Stage 2.
